"Father Language"

Why I call Chinese Language as my 'Father' Language..

Because I'm in fact chinese.. ;D
I have Chinese Name, just called me Chen Xiao Jie.. 陈小姐。

Many chinese in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and others. In history, where the World Ward II begun, many Chinese who didn't want to participate in war, decided to flee from the country and move to other country. My friends said, they went to some ship, didn't know exactly where they went, as long as they can flee the country and the war. Two of them, are my grandfather and grandmother.

I don't know the chinese roots from my mother, since my mom don't tell me much about it. But I know strongly from my father. My last name, my face, and in fact, I still have my family there.

I have cousins living in Hong Kong. And a lot still live in place, where my ancestor lived.. Hahaha..

I must dig the photo from my family photo album collection. I visit the city about 4 years ago. In fact, I am GuangDong people 广东人。And do you know what they popular of? They eat everything, from snake to dog.
My family from MeiXian 梅县,Mei Zhou 梅州

My family went there with my cousin's family, there was chinese tradition, where we went to the oldest family, to give the photo of my passed grandmother to the main house, so all family can pray every year. The "Main House", my dad told me is where my ancestor were living. You can see, the photo from you great great great grandfather and so on.. My Ancestor was from small county, located on MeiXian, where you still can see rice field on left and right.

After that, we have family lunch together, and they serve all 10 dishes to welcome their guests (another tradition). One of them was dog meat, and it was served in front of me and my cousin, who in fact were drooling of the food. Luckily, we ask first, what kind of meat that was. And you can see the face of the parents, when my chinese family told them. And i know it was not "ordinary" food.

It was so different!! The culture and the face. I mean, everything. I cant really feel connected with them, even we are connected with blood, and same last name. My father was born in Jakarta, and also my aunt, and rest of us. They were born in China. We speak Indonesian since born, my Dad  and Aunt still can speak Chinese, but I don't know if they can speak Hakka or not.

And you know, Chinese Family usually have many children. We went to my Father's Oldest Sister Family there. She has passed away, we met her children or my cousins. They were in fact, as old as my Dad. One of them, already have grandson. Yes, My own Nephew already have son. I have two nephew who already became doctors. So funny...!! Where in Indonesia, my niece and nephew from my cousins was still baby.

I visited once, but I never remember the name and the location. Just after I learned that not all china people eat the 'not ordinary' food as we thought ( or as I thought ) before. My teachers all told me ( because they are north china people ), just south china people 南方人 who eat that "not ordinary" food, especially Guang Dong. And one day, I asked my father, and he said. well we are Guang Dong People. I just can laugh about it.

We don't have the strong chinese tradition anymore, my family don't. We just Celebrated Chinese New Year. That's it.. I know others Indonesian Chinese Family in Indonesia still celebrated and have strong chinese tradition, but my family don't. From 5 members of my family, just my Dad can speak Chinese, and me still learning. My Mom, my 2nd brother can't speak at all. My First brother can speak a little, since he learned once and right now he has fiance who speak chinese everyday with her families.
_____________________________

Indonesian Language is my first language or my mother tongue.
Chinese Language is my "Father" Language, or my third language. (since English is my 2nd language).
And all of my life, I hate Chinese Language, but here I am, learning it, because simply can't denied the roots, the bloods, or the fact that chinese language now 2nd most used language, and China is climbing to the top number one country in the world.

Back to learning Chinese

Why suddenly I choose to learn Chinese Language / Mandarin? If you do know me for longer time, I Hated so much these Language, even I'm a Chinese.. ( actually Indonesian - Chinese, believe it or not I'm javanese.. ) and I hated China... It's dirty-cold country.. I remember the first time I went to China, I almost died ( overr!!) nope, nope.. not that horrible, I just get asthma attack when I went to sightseeing in Jiuzhaigou.. The air was so thin, I cant breathe with the tight turtleneck clothes.. Somebody has to cut the turtleneck so I can breathe..

And horrible experiences!! My hotel in Jiuzhaigou wont turn on the heater.. My brother and I just stayed on the bathroom, we were sitting on the bathtub, drinking coke, while the hot water running on the bathtub.. I remember slept with 5-6 clothes on.. It's so cold, even I sweared to my self, I DIDNT LIKE CHINA!! The toilet is so disgusting, just imagine you doing ur business just in a small hole, without door, and it got flush just once a hour, and in women toilet.. so imagine if one of the toilet visitor got her period.. how disgusting in that hole.. OMG!! I can still imagine it..

(Right now, I've already told that only Jiuzhaigou, that kind of toilet is existed.. the city much more modern now.. If in the future I go back to the JiuZhaiGou, I will definetly took the photo of the toilet to show all of you.. Even I had horrible experiences in JiuZhaiGou, it still has the best view.. )

And now why suddenly I want to go back to China, and learning the one language that I already avoid for 22 years I'm breathing in these live? Because suddenly, I think I fall in love with these language.. I was relieved because my parents not like any other parents who want their children to learn mandarin in China.. But I was wrong..

When I just graduated, without job and anything else to do.. I asked my mom, if I could take some language courses to fill my free time.. She agreed, in that time, I just think to take English course to improve my spoken english.. but the courses is not open at that time, because it still waited more participant.. So I went to another courses, I was thinking to take Korean/Japanese/French.. then suddenly I went to Mandarin Expert, institution for mandarin courses..

They're just opened the new courses for beginner.. If I dont join then, I must wait for another one month.. so I joined.. My mom told me that went she told my Dad about me took chinese course, he said why I didnt go directly to China, much more effective than learning chinese in Jakarta.. I just laughed at that time..

Then one day, he asked me to choose, study for master program or language program, because he doesnt approve her daughter to work, he wanted his three children to finish their study.. My brothers already went their master program.. Even my 2nd brother asked to quit his job, so he could took the master program.. and he did...

I dont want to take master program, why? Because if I took the master program, it needed 2 years to finish the program.. When I finished, I already 24.. Left 1 year for me chasing my dream.. so NOPE!! and I dont think it's necessary for women achieve master degree, right now that what I'm thinking.. I dont know the future might bring..

So here I am learning Mandarin.. I fell in love after learning by myself.. because in Mandarin Expert, they teach only the pinyin, they dont teach us the hanzi ( the chinese characters )..
ex : Mother = mama (pinyin) = 妈妈 ( hanzi )..

Another reasons for me to learn Chinese are:
1. China is the big and powerful country, when the economy is much more stable than America, itself..
2. Many Chinese are spread throughout countries...
3. Mandarin Chinese is the 2nd most used languages in the world.. some chinese characters are also used in japanese n korean.. ex : Japan 日本 -> Chinese = Riben / Japanese = Nihon
4. I want to be able to apply Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong airlines.. looked up my seniors who already worked at Cathay..
5. to improve my qualifications.. 3 languages are more valuable than just 2 languages..
6. I'm a Chinese..

The picture is taken when I try to write Hanzy by myself, like children learn to write.. Hahaha..
I try to write full one page, and then I became bored, n stopped writing.. Hahaha..

Right now, I'm in 3rd beginner course.. Above picture is all the books I used for studying..
I have 5 books from courses, the blue one for 1st Beginner, the yellow in the middle for 2nd beginner, and the orange one for my 3rd beginner courses..
I have another book, the green one, but it's not in the picture.. Sometime, I read the green book while trying to sleep.. Just reading.. Sometime not always.. :D

BLCU it is...

Hey...
Now I already decided and register for 6 month short term Spring 2010 of Chinese Language Program in BLCU.. Wew, that's long... :D

After very-very-confused (overreact!!?) about choosing university, I just forgot about another important thing, which program n how long..

I promised myself to start register on Tuesday, no matter what which university or it will be more longer.. then there I was, driving to my agency, register to BLCU and then I just forgot.. I hadn't yet discussed it with my father about the program, I just discussed which university.. (He choose BLCU, btw) All I remember was my father want me to study for 1 year, because when I said to him that I wanted to study only 1 semester, He said that it wasn't enough.. (and He can speak Chinese..)

So I decided to register one-year program.. When I went home and told him, he said why I didnt register for one semester, he was afraid that I didnt like living in China, especially Beijing (the bitter-sweet city, nope, it's CHINA!!)

SO, on today, I went back to my agency, complete the document, and change my registration to one semester, application of F visa.. and DONE!!!

One of my close friends, Kelly, told me that her cousin who went to BLCU told her, that BLCU is right place, not everyone in BLCU party much like the gossip said..
And I feel more confident with my choice, after email one of BLCU student I met at one forum, he also said that It's better to choose the short term program than long term program, because long term program is 1 year class with the same group of students and teachers, so you stuck on the same classes through one year..

I hope you dont get bored reading my long post of blog.. hahaha..

Which One? BLCU-BNU?

Well, It all started from the moment I'm graduate from my university.. The first things to do for a new unemployed like me is finding a job.. Well, at least that's whats in my mind.. I want to look a job in my field, hospitality or tourism industry..

Because of bad economy, and not really good opportunity at while, my dream becoming a flight attendant must be paused.. ( I said paused, not stopped ).. SQ not hiring, Cathay Pacific not, Korean Area is missed.. Garuda definitely not ( my parents would freaked ).. so looking for hospitality field, not through 2nd interview at Mandarin Oriental.. got bored at home, I'm thinking to take some language courses to fill my free time..

First, I thought I want to improve my English speaking skill, but the class is not opened yet, too minim student.. So, I thought mandarin would be good choice, the class had just started, so I joined a little bit late.. For many years, I'm so thankful my parents is not kinda parents that push their children to learn mandarin.. n I'm WRONG!!..

When my Dad heard that I want to take mandarin courses.. He told my mom, better made me go to China.. And then the story went on and on, I've given two choices, continue to master degree or go to China.. I choose the 2nd choice, learn mandarin in China.. when I ask all my friends, they supported me to go to China... ( yeah, you, Norita, Kelly, Burhan, JK.... )

and then here I am.. this is my first step to be lost in Beijing.. hahaha..
first choose the right school... and these step no move any further, because I'm still confused...

1. BLCU or Beijing Language and Culture University..
well it spoken to be the one and only university that specially in teaching Chinese languages to the foreigners..

(+) :

* most of all books used in universities throughout China for learning Putonghua is created by BLCU
* 40 years experience for teaching Putonghua.. ( Mandarin language )
* Many foreigners go here..
* Wudaokou area, it said to be well lively neighborhood, with many restaurants, mandarin courses, shops..

( - ) :

* Highest education cost..
* It was said many Indonesians come to here.. but It also said it much become so much fewer nowadays..
* Too much foreigners means many chances to use english, instead mandarin..
* Negative Influences and Surroundings, such as clubbing, partying.

2. BNU or Beijing Normal University

(+) :

* It well said to be one of the top universities in China for its own people..
* Known for teacher's colleges..
* Not many foreigners come here.
* Because it is local university, so many Chinese people go here as well..
* It's little cheaper than BLCU.. just little...

( - ):

* Too much homework, it is said 2-4 hours to do the homework at one day..
* Some foreigner commented about the teaching system is not appropriate or useless ( maybe because they are not used to.. )
* Too many koreans, japanese and also Indonesian..

Well for third and fourth choice was CNU or Capital Normal University and Tsinghua.. I dont get much information about Tsinghua because it was said to be 2nd best local university but poor in chinese language program.. ( like learning about languages in ITB ( one of Indonesian top university that best known for engineering major ))...

3. CNU or Capital Normal University..
(+) :

* Much more cheaper..
* One of the best dorm in Beijing..
* Convenient, gym, shops, classes, dorm are located in one building..

( - ):

* Many Indonesians, especially from East Java..
* One of my agencies told me that it was located in one building, the students are poor experienced talking with local people.. ( their Chinese don't improve much )
* They are divided in groups from the country, Indonesian with Indonesian, Thai with Thai..

so, which one.. now my mind more to BLCU than BNU.. said 60% BLCU and 40% BNU..

For looking universities, I know some people who through the same experience that is finding the right universities..
There are 3 peoples... One goes BUU, one goes BLCU, and one goes BNU.. hahaha.. and each of them are told me to go where they want to go... I'm still confused though.. at these saturday, there will be Chinese Education Fair, I will attend and hope at Monday, I will register in one of the agencies.. so I can book the dorm ASAP.. ( the dorm systems are the first come first served, so I must be hurry )
